Mateo and Sofía remain the most popular baby names in the Canary Islands, according to the Canarian Institute of Statistics.
Mateo, the Spanish equivalent of Matthew, has topped the Canarian charts since 2019, while Sofía, a Greek name meaning “wisdom”, first took the top spot last year.
The top ten boys’ names are: Mateo, Thiago, Liam, Leo, Hugo, Enzo, Gael, Dylan, Noah and Diego. The girls’ top ten is Sofía, Martina, Valeria, Valentina, Olivia, Lucía, Chloe, Emma, Alma and Gara.
The only Canarian name in the top ten is Gara, the name of a legendary Guanche princess of La Gomera, who fell in love with prince Jonay. The ill-fated couple threw themselves to their deaths from a peak in what is now named the Garajonay National Park in their honour.
