The third protest against the effects of mass tourism will take place at 11am this morning, starting at the bandstand in Arrecife’s Parque de José Ramírez Cerda and marching to the Cabildo building.

Organisers claim the island is “in a state of social and environmental collapse” and are calling for authorities to “change the model of mass tourism for a more regulated model based on deceleration and a sustainable co-existence of the tourist industry with the welfare of the general population.”

If it is anything like last year’s protest, the demonstration will be a noisy, passionate affair with absolutely no violence or threats against tourists. In fact, several residents and tourists support the objectives of the march. Few visitors go to Arrecife on a Sunday in any case, although a P&O cruiser is expected today.
