Between 1,500 and 2,000 protesters turned out in Puerto del Carmen at midday yesterday for the second protest demanding a change of the model of mass tourism.

Carrying placards bearing slogans such as “Tourism Yes, But Not like This” and chanting, the protesters marched from Los Pocillos before assembling in front of the Fariones Hotel to hear a speech that repeated the demands of the first protest on April 20th.
“They’ve talked a lot about rethinking the model, but the problems have not stopped getting worse,” says lawyer Irma Ferrer, who read out a manifesto calling for a stop to new roads and more hire cars, the promotion of public transport, among other demands.
The attendance at the protest was well below the estimated 10,000 who turned out for the April demonstration in Arrecife.
