César Manrique’s sculpture Fertility, more widely known as the Monumento del Campesino, has been returned to its position at the heart of Lanzarote after restoration and repair work.
The 15-metre-tall abstract white monument, originally made out of water tanks and other salvaged elements from abandoned ships, the monument was damaged in high winds in April 2024 and taken down from the Peña de Tajaste for repair.
The monument has been structurally reinforced, treated for anti-rusting and reassembled using modern techniques that increase stability and durability.
The monument was designed by Manrique and built by his colleague Jesús Soto in 1969. At first, the imposing modernist artwork received criticism, but it has gone on to become an emblem of Lanzarote.
