Due to overwhelming public interest, the photographic exhibition “Macaronesia 1975-2025” will extend its run at La Casa Amarilla for an additional week, now closing on Saturday, October 4th.
Since its opening on July 24th, it has already captivated 3,194 visitors with its powerful visual narrative of the last fifty years in the Atlantic archipelagos.
Curated by Gabriel Betancor, the exhibition presents a compelling journey through time with nearly 95 pieces, including photographs, archival documents, and audiovisual materials sourced from public collections across the Canary Islands, Madeira, Cape Verde, and the Azores.
The Lanzarote Data Centre, which manages the exhibition space under the direction of Councillor Ascensión Toledo, made the decision to extend the show, giving more people the chance to experience this unique historical perspective.
Exploring a Pivotal Era
The exhibition uses the year 1975 as a crucial turning point. The socio-political upheavals of the mid-70s – namely the Carnation Revolution in Portugal (1974) and the death of Spanish dictator Franco (1975) – fundamentally altered the relationship between the mainland and these Atlantic territories.
From that pivotal moment to the present day in 2025, “Macaronesia 1975-2025” provides a visual overview of these five transformative decades. It analyses far-reaching changes from multiple angles:
- Political: The arrival of democracy and armed struggle movements.
- Economic: The transition from rural and fishing economies to mass tourism, and integration into the EU.
- Social: Evolutions in health, education, and women’s entry into the labour market.
- Cultural: The dynamic tension between modernity and tradition.
