This weekend is one of the busiest fiesta weekends of the year, as the celebrations in honour of the Virgin of Carmen, patron of fishermen and sailors, come to an end with three maritime parades.

Maritime parades are a tradition in which the image of the virgin is taken from the local church, and mounted on a boat which is joined by several other boats, all tooting their whistles. The procession ends with fireworks and, usually, a party or concert back on shore.   A similar event also takes place in Puerto del Carmen’s Old Town Harbour in three weeks time.

Of course, these aren’t the only fiesta events taking place. There’ll also be verbenas (open air balls), concerts, barbecues, sporting events and much more. Check your local Ayuntamiento’s website for full details.
