Wheat has been successfully grown for the first time at the Cabildo’s Experimental Farm in Tahiche. The wheat will provide raw materials for up to 20 crafters who weave straw hats.
Crafts councillor Aroa Revelo said “For the first time we have planted wheat with the firm intention of assuring the future of our handicrafts… Sowing wheat is not just an agricultural act; it’s a declaration of commitment to our roots.”
Lanzarote was once known as “the granary of the Canaries” for its production of wheat, barley, maize and rye. That ended when many of the fields were covered with lava following the eruptions of the 1730s.
