The Assembly of Lanzarote’s Water Consortium is considering the results of a preliminary report that shows “serious deficiencies” in the water services provided by Canal Gestión, and a termination of the contract has not been ruled out.

The report, claimed to be the most exhaustive assessment of a public contract ever commissioned on the island, highlights deficiencies such as the continued failure to reduce water losses and the constant water cuts that are suffered in rural parts of the island.

The Water Consortium, which includes representatives from the Cabildo and the island’s seven councils, will now study more detailed reports before taking action.

Canal Gestión were contracted in 2013 when the Cabildo privatised the water supply on the island after the public utility Inalsa had entered receivership.
