The Guardia Civil’s nature protection unit, Seprona, has fined Lanzarote’s Tourist Centres (CACTs) for exceeding the permitted number of vehicles at Timanfaya.
The legal document controlling use of the Timanfaya National Park establishes an upper limit of just 90 cars and eight buses, which the complaint claims was exceeded on at least two days last August.
In fact, the long queues of vehicles waiting to enter the Montañas de Fuego have become a regular occurrence – a problem that has persisted for several years. The CACTs (Centres of Art, Culture and Tourism) have planned to tackle the problem by selling tickets with established time slots, but this has not yet occurred.
Last week, the director of the National Park, Pascual Gil, told La Voz de Lanzarote that the queues of vehicles threaten road safety and claimed that the CACTS invested nothing in conservation of the National Park.
