The culinary heritage of Lanzarote took centre stage in the Spanish capital this week with the presentation of the book Cocina Tradicional de Lanzarote by Fefo Nieves.
During the event, Councilor Armando Santana emphasised that “this book is not just about recipes; it is about identity, memory, and a very specific way of understanding life in Lanzarote.” Santana described the work as “a true act of preservation that connects the future of the sector with pride in our roots.”
He also highlighted the significance of presenting the book in Madrid, calling the city “a showcase and point of connection, where Lanzarote is presented not only as a tourist destination, but as an island with culture, local products, and cuisine that deserves to be known and respected.”
Cabildo President Oswaldo Betancort echoed these sentiments, stating that the book “is also a tool for passing on to new generations a legacy that we cannot afford to lose.” He reaffirmed the Cabildo’s commitment to gastronomy and hospitality as strategic pillars of the island’s identity and development.
A Celebration of Roots
Since its initial launch in 2025, this work has sparked tremendous public interest. Published by the Cabildo and SPEL Turismo-Lanzarote, and distributed by the Cabildo, thousands of copies have already been circulated on the island.
The councillor responsible for the publications service, Ascensión Toledo, noted that this overwhelming success “confirms the enormous affection that Lanzarote society feels for its roots and its culinary tradition.”
The author, Fefo Nieves Caraballo, expressed his gratitude for the steadfast support of the Cabildo of Lanzarote and SPEL-Turismo Lanzarote. The book Cocina Tradicional de Lanzarote is brought to life with evocative photography by Moisés Acosta, offering a visual feast that complements the authentic recipes and narratives within.
