Oswaldo Betancort, President of Lanzarote’s Cabildo, has said “I don’t want to get involved in wars between one group and another” after cancelling Friday’s general meeting of the island’s government.
Betancort, of the Coalición Canaria (CC), cancelled the meeting after members of the Partido Popular (PP) threatened to take legal action against him unless he re-admitted their proposed motion to declare Spain’s Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, persona non grata on Lanzarote.
Betancort had earlier excluded the motion after Socialists had appealed against it on the grounds that it was illegal.
“There’s an argument at national level that is causing us to lose focus and affecting daily management at local level,” said Betancort, explaining that he had cancelled the meeting in order to obtain legal advice. The President also expressed annoyance that the PP had not contacted him prior to issuing their threat.
The Socialists and the CC both won eight seats in 2023, but a pact with the PP allowed the CC to form a majority ruling group which has been in charge of the island since the elections.
Pedro Sánchez is likely to holiday on Lanzarote in August, although this remains unconfirmed. Even if the motion to declare him persona non grata were to succeed (which is highly unlikely), it would have no effect.
