Lanzarote’s Cabildo has approved a proposal to limit the use of noisy fireworks on the island.
The motion, proposed by councillor Armando Santana of Nueva Canarias, was supported by all parties apart from Vox, who voted against it.
“This is not about going against parties or traditions, but about evolving towards more inclusive, safe, and respectful celebrations for people and animals,” said Santana.
“It has been demonstrated that noisy pyrotechnics affect the health of vulnerable people and cause suffering, panic, and even death in domestic animals and wildlife,” he continued.
The proposal will establish an island law, supported by municipal regulations, which will limit noisy fireworks to expressly authorised shows and promote the use of alternatives, such as silent fireworks, lightshows and drone displays.
The Cabildo will set an example by insisting that shows that it organises or supports will “generally” take place without noisy fireworks.
