Representatives of Lanzarote’s Cabildo and its seven local councils gathered yesterday to sign the first Island Pact Against Hate Speech & Visibility for the LGBT+ Community.

The agreement will help to establish effective strategies to create a more inclusive and respectful society. It covers areas of awareness-raising, workplace protection, information gathering and training in human rights.

The pact has already been approved by the Cabildo and the Ayuntamientos of Teguise, Tías and Yaiza. Over the summer it will be incorporated by the remaining four Ayuntamientos.

Cabildo President Oswaldo Betancort said, “Lanzarote should be proud that all the institutions and groups related to inclusion and diversity have united top support this initiative.”

After the signing, the 2024 Pride Manifesto was read out at the entrance to the Cabildo. Lánzate, the island’s main LGBTI+ collective, said “Enough of picking on us in schools, enough of being last in everything, enough of using our colours, enough of putting us all in the same gender-binary box.”
