Socialist councillors on Lanzarote’s Cabildo have accused the ruling group led by Oswaldo Betancort of “scandalous” overspending.

They claim that the government has overspent by almost €61 million, and that an adjustment plan will now be necessary to cover the debt.

The Cabildo spent €106 million in 2023, the last election year, but spending rose to €171 million in 2024. This has led to a deficit of over €10 million which will require an adjustment plan.

Socialist spokesperson Ariagona González, said “This is what happens when you rule based on headlines, propaganda and parties, while ignoring the most basic principles of public management… Money has been burned on celebrations and whims, and now we will all have to pay the consequences.”
