4,000 people have been evacuated from their homes in La Palma as forest fires rage out of control on the western Canary island.
Canarian President Fernando Clavijo has said that the perimeter of the fire is controlled, confining the blaze to an area of 4,765 hectares; but that the flames are still not under control.
It is the second time within two years that major evacuations have taken place on La Palma, following the volcanic eruption in late 2021. The affected area is a forested zone in the north-east of the island, in the municipality of Puntagorda.
Firefighters and hydroplanes will continue to fight the fire today, and a decrease in the wind speeds that were fanning the blaze is a positive factor.
