One of the owners of the El Islote del Francés in Arrecife has appealed against the city’s decision to declare the area for public use.

Club de Golf El Cortijo SL, which owns 50% of the plot, seeks to reverse the decision of the Canarian High Court, which rejected the plea of another owner, Inversiones Islote del Francés SL, for €200 million.

The new case will be heard by the Canarian Supreme Court, and almost certainly prolong the situation in which one of the prime areas of land in the capital – lying between the Marina and the Charco de San Ginés – has lain almost completely abandoned for decades.

Arrecife council was recently forced to demolish a wall on the Islote following an incident in which a homeless person died when one of the crumbling buildings in the zone collapsed.
