After weeks of fruitless negotiations, unions have reached a preliminary agreement with the FEHT (Federation of Hotel and Tourism Businesses of Las Palmas) to avoid the Easter week strike by hotel workers.

Last week, unions representing hotel workers have warned that they will strike during Easter week if wages in the sector are not improved.

After a second meeting with the tourism employers’ association failed to reach agreement on wages, Borja Suárez, secretary of the CCOO Services Federation, and Francisco González, secretary of Hospitality and Tourism for UGT Canarias, said they could not be flexible on what is owed to workers who are contributing to the millions in profits of the recent tourist boom.

González said, “We’re facing an employers’ association that doesn’t realize that its workers are the ones who drive a multi-million-dollar sector”.

HOPE TO AVOID STRIKE

The Federation will meet this morning to debate the agreement, and workers’ union reps will also be consulted.

The terms of the agreement have not been released, but an announcement is expected later today.
