Haría Ayuntamiento has removed a fascist symbol from the primary school in Mala on the 50th anniversary of the death of General Franco in 1975.
Although it had been partially covered by a large sign bearing the name of the school, the symbol appeared to be a carving of the coat of arms that Franco approved for Spain featuring an eagle flanked by the yoke and bundle of arrows used by the Falange, the fascist party that was the only political party permitted in Spain during the dictatorship.
Haría’s Mayor, Alfredo Villalba, said the action would strengthen Haría as “a place where everyone feels represented, where history is remembered but does not block our pathway to a fairer, more diverse future.”
