Do you know about the Novios de El Mojón (Lovers of El Mojón)? Here’s where they came from and what they symbolise.
The spectacularly endowed Novios de El Mojón (Lovers of El Mojón) are based on ancient sculptures made by the original natives of Lanzarote.
The figures are believed to have been symbols used in a fertility cult, and the tradition was revived by famous potter Dorotea de Armas, whose statue can be found at Mancha Blanca, and the folklorist Juan Brito.
More recently, figures of the two lovers were exchanged between couples – the boy would present a male figure to the object of his affections and, if accepted, she would respond by giving him a female figure.
The figures, usually made of clay excavated from the top of the Famara cliffs, are now a popular Lanzarote souvenir.
