Spain’s regional health services expect to start administering a fourth dose of Covid vaccine in the second half of September, as a precautionary measure against an expected eighth wave in autumn and winter.
The next wave is expected to be similar to the one that occurred in early summer, with a huge amount of mild infections but relatively few serious cases that will put pressure on health services.
Currently, the jab is only being considered for those over the age of 60 and others who are particularly vulnerable, and the roll out is likely to follow the pattern of previous campaigns, with over-80s first.
12.5 million in Spain are over 60 years old and will be entitled to receive the vaccine. Of these, 93% have already received three jabs.
