The Canarian Government has announced the official review procedure for a controversial  fish-farming project off the coast of Lanzarote.

Yaizatun, the company that operated the fish farms near Playa Quemada until their recent closure, is proposing to locate 56 marine cages two kilometres out to sea off the coast of Playa Honda and Arrecife.  The cages will be used to raise dorada, sea bass and tuna.

Lanzarote’s Cabildo has already opposed the project, with outgoing President María Dolores Corujo pledging that it will never take place.

The review procedure is likely to see several objections from Lanzarote, where the project has been rejected by all institutions and a large amount of fishing, sporting and leisure organisations.
