The Canarian Government has selected the Yaizatun SA company to carry out fish farming in a zone further off the coast of Lanzarote.
Yaizatun’s fish farm off the coast of Playa Quemada recently closed with the loss of 50 jobs, putting an end to the fish farming industry on Lanzarote. However, it will only be a temporary end if the new project goes ahead.
The proposed new fish farming area is around a kilometre from shore, measures more than 9 kilometres in length and stretches from Matagorda to Arrecife.
The proposal is now open to objections, and opposition is expected to be fierce, as the Cabildo, the Ayuntamientos of Tías and San Bartolomé, and the fishing guilds in the area have already stated that they are against the project.
