A fire broke out in one of the basement units of the Papagayo Centre in Playa Blanca yesterday, causing the centre to close while fire fighters intervened.
Posts on social media appeared in local residents’ groups yesterday after smoke could be seen billowing out from the Papagayo Centre close the centre of town.
The emergency services were alerted to a large amount of smoke coming from the centre and arrived in full force shortly after. Fire engines could be seen in front of the centre as the area was cordoned off and businesses closed for the time being.
The fire fighters found that the smoke was coming from one of the storage units in the basement which had flooded the area in smoke.
Although the fire was at first difficult to extinguish in its entirety, after several hours the fire fighters brought the fire under control.
No injuries were reported, however, Diario de Lanzarote report that a number of cats were inside the basement, two of which were saved but one was found dead.
