Tonight is Nochebuena in Spain, and on Christmas Eve most families will gather around a lavish Christmas meal, while some may head out to celebrate mass at their local church.

At 11pm tonight, the Villa of Teguise will stage its annual  recreation of the nativity scene, with music and dancing by the Rancho de Pascua de Teguise.

The event is perhaps the most famous Misa de Gallo (Rooster Mass) on the island, famous for its living tableau of the birth of Christ and the stirring, ancient sound of the Rancho folk group, who play drums, tambourines and swords while dancing.

Space is limited within the church of Our Lady of  Guadelupe, but the rancho will also leave the church and perform in the square.

A similar mass and performance by the Rancho de Pascua Archinech de Tinajo will take place at the San Roque church in Tinajo tonight at 8pm.
