The owners of an abandoned complex in Playa Blanca have asked Yaiza Ayuntamiento to investigate the possibility of evicting squatters and demolishing the buildings, La Voz de Lanzarote reports.
Coral Homes SL, owned by the Caixabank and the American vulture fund Lone Star, has requested that Yaiza Council carry out a structural report that would assess the “risk of collapse” of the buildings, establishing the potential risks of collapse and recommending the eviction of around 60 families who live in the buildings.
Coral originally brought a action to evict the residents of the buildings, many of whom work in local hotels. However, the court rejected this on the grounds that they “had not shown any interest in the property for an extended period of time.” Instead, the company has resorted to civil means to clear the complex.
The complex was abandoned by the Inversur company in 2006 after they failed to overcome protection measures applying to the nearby Pechiguera lighthouse, a listed building. It was later acquitted by Coral from Spain’s “bad bank”.
