Spain’s Eurovision choice for 2024, Nebulossa, made a surprise appearance at Arrecife’s carnival last night – their first performance since winning the nomination to represent Spain at the Benidorm Festival.

Singer Mery Blas and keyboard player Mark Dasousa appeared as part of the drag queen contest, performing the duo’s song Zorra, which has caused controversy for its lyrics.

“Zorra” in Spanish means “bitch” or “slut”, and, although the song aims to reclaim the word with lyrics such as “If I go out alone I’m a bitch, If I have fun, I’m the sluttiest, but I’m having a good time and will shout it out to the four winds”, it has also been criticized by some feminists for normalising a word which is often used abusively towards women. However, the song has also received widespread support, including from Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez and the Equality Minister, Ana Redondo.
