Environmental group Ecologists In Action have called for a halt to “all road-widening projects, new roundabouts and new road layouts on the island of Lanzarote”.
The group highlights projects such as the proposed widening of the roads from Yaiza to playa Blanca; the LZ-40 to Puerto del Carmen and the proposed new road parallel to the existing LZ-2 between the airport and Arrecife and demands the creation of a Road and Landscape Plan which maximises the potential of existing roads.
Ecologists In Action claim that roads should reflect “the spirit of Lanzarote”, typified by the roads to Timanfaya, the Salinas de Janubio and Cueva de los Verdes. They also call for much better use of public transport.
