The main Canarian political parties have once again mobilised for the EU elections which will be held next Sunday, the 9th of June. Posters, flags and publicity are now visible all over the island.
It will be the second EU parliament election that British nationals will be ineligible to vote in following Brexit. However, all other foreign residents from an EU member state on the island will have the right to vote, and voting slips should already have been sent out to those registered.
The taking part include the two main Spanish national parties, the Socialists and the conservative PP, as well as the centre-right Ciudadanos and the far-right Vox party. The Canarian regional parties, meanwhile, will be represented by the Coalición Canaria and Nueva Canarias, who have teamed up with the left-wing Sumar party for the elections.
The previous MEPs for the Canaries, Gabriel Mato of the PP and Juan Fernando López Aguilar of the Socialists are both standing for another term and will be joined on the ballot by at least four other names.
On the Canaries, the main candidates for the six parties are as follows:
Ciudadanos – Benito Manuel Regalado Reyes.
Coalición Canaria – Carlos Alonso.
Partido Popular (PP) – Gabriel Mato.
Socialists (PSOE) – Juan Fernando López Aguilar.
Sumar/Nueva Canarias – Lorena del Mar López Sánchez.
Vox – Nicasio Galván.
