Lanzarote’s Cabildo has sent a report to the island’s seven councils to remind them that tourist excursions in quads and buggies are prohibited on rural land.
The Cabildo has urged the Ayuntamientos to act on the issue as it claims the noise and dust generated by this kind of tourism can seriously damage the natural environment of the island.
Cabildo President Oswaldo Betancort said, “Protection of the landscape and the sustainable management of the territory are priorities of the Cabildo, and this must also apply to anyone involved in tourism and territorial management.”
Councillor for Territorial Policy, Jesús Machín Tavío, commented “No official network of routes has been approved for this type of activity, and until then, the circulation of vehicles in convoys through the natural environment is prohibited”.
Machín added “This is not about banning tourist activity, but about ordering and regulating it so that it does not cause irreversible damage to our territory. You can drive on tarmac, but not on other paths and roads that these vehicles destroy when passing over them.”
