Tiás Ayuntamiento has honoured 96-year-old Conil resident Guillermina Rodríguez Cruz with the title of Rural Woman of the Year.
The award, which recognises the cultural importance of women in Lanzarote’s agricultural zones, was presented to Doña Guillermina by Mayor José Juan Cruz yesterday, in the presence of several members of her family.
Guillermina Rodríguez Crus was born in 1927 and went to work in the fields, sewing onions and grain and gathering tomatoes, from an early age. However, she also had a curiosity to learn and attended the local school.
Skilled at the traditional crafts of rosette-making and embroidery. She is also an accomplished baker of cakes and biscuits.
The tribute ended “Women like Guillermina reconcile us with life and with the earth.”
