The health councillor of Haría Ayuntamiento, Marcos Lemes, has called for the Cabildo to come up with a plan to tackle extreme weather conditions, saying “climate change is here, now”.

His comments follow the recent high seas, which saw some residents in Arrieta and Punta Mujeres experiences floods in their homes for the first time, causing damage to floors and fittings.  “The streets were covered in stones and rubble. I’ve never seen anything like this before,” said Lemes.

Lermes pointed out that the ferry to las Graciosa has had to be suspended three times in recent weeks and claimed that “there are no more winters” on Lanzarote. “Instead, it’s summer upon summer, and there are still those who don’t want to see, to admit that this is here to stay.”

Lemes also said, “We have to get used to heatwaves and start to think about what’s happening.”
