The César Manrique Foundation (FCM) has opposed a plan to extract sand from the desert region of El Jable.

The FCM has lodged an objection with the Canarian Government following an application by a local company to “take advantage of sand” in the Hoya de la Plata area near Muñique in Teguise.

The FCM claims that El Jable is a “finite” natural resource and points out that the sand and dunes in the region have been gradually disappearing as a result of human exploitation.

El Jable is also classed as a protected buffer zone for the Famara cliffs and beach area within the terms of Lanzarote’s Biosphere status, the FCM point out. In addition, the desert area is home to endangered bird species such as the Houbara bustard, the Cream-Coloured Courser and the Stone Curlew.
