The President of the Cabildo, Maria Dolores Corujo, has informed the Mayor of Tinajo that the centre for unaccompanied minors in La Santa will be “moved as soon as possible”.

Following confrontations between young migrants and local youths at the weekend, Corujo informed Jesús Machín, Mayor of  of Tinajo, that the President of the Canarian Government, Angel Victor Torres, had pledged to send Canarian police officers to La Sant a on Wednesday.

The Canarian Government also pledged to refer conflictive youngsters to other centres, while the Cabildo has increased the staff at the centre.

The pledges follow calls from Machín’s Coalición Canaria to close the centre as soon as possible. The hostel just south of La Santa was used as a place for school trips and summer camps before being  taken over to accommodate unaccompanied migrants in 2019.
