A demonstration will be held today against the extermination of feral cats in the Canaries.
On Lanzarote, the protest will take place at 11 am in front of the Government Delegation on Arrecife’s seafront.
According to Ademal, the protest arises from “the revulsion caused by last week’s killing of a cat from a colony on La Graciosa on the orders of the Canarian Government’s environmental department.”
The protest marks the latest conflict between animal welfare supporters and environmentalists who believe the cat is an invasive species on the islands, claiming that it has attacked and diminished populations of native animals such as birds and lizards.
Ademal and other groups challenge this claim, and support the catch, neuter and release method for controlling feral cat populations.
