The southern carnival fuse has been lit. While the main Playa Blanca Carnival is set for 12th to 15th March, Yaiza launched its festivities in spectacular style last Saturday with a fantasy-filled gala in Uga.

A marquee packed to capacity enjoyed a dazzling explosion of creativity from four dedicated music and dance groups. The performances of Ballet Dance Pop, Comparsa Los Timanfeiros, and the batucadas Los Yaiseros and Ritmos del Sur successfully filled the south of Lanzarote with pure carnival spirit.

The gala opened with Ballet Dance Pop presenting an exclusive tribute to “The Gods of Olympus,” the official theme of the 2026 Playa Blanca Carnival. Led by choreographer Ruymán Medina, their gods and goddesses dazzled with a coordinated routine, a striking musical setting, and costumes by designer Manuel Camejo.

Ancient Japan then arrived at the southern Carnival as the 22-strong batucada Los Yaiseros, directed by Willy Morales, performed as “Warriors of the Rising Sun.” Their rhythmic fantasy, shaped by Manuel Camejo’s designs, was a potent mix of rhythm, passion, and joy.

Next, the celebrated comparsa Los Timanfeiros, founded in 1994 and a firm part of Yaiza’s festive history, took the stage. Marking the fifth anniversary of their comeback, their performance confirmed a group that had dearly missed Carnival. Their 50 members, featuring choreography by Jony Gutiérrez and batucada direction by Dani García, delivered characteristic art, dance, and compelling stage presence.

The honour of closing the night fell to the batucada Ritmos del Sur. Their adventurous theme, “Vikings of Valhalla,” saw Scandinavian sailors drop anchor in Uga. The warrior-themed performance, under the direction of Néstor Rodríguez, showcased the characteristic spirit and identity of this growing group. Chaired by Acoidán Betancort, Ritmos del Sur moves forward with the beat of its drums, good vibes, and the commitment of its 32 members.
