The tourist tax introduced in the municipality of Mogán, in Gran Canaria, has raised €721,800 since its introduction last year, reports La Voz de Lanzarote. The popular tourist area hopes to raise more than €1.3 million through the tax in 2026.

Mayor Onalia Bueno introduced the 15-cents-per-night municipal charge last year, although it was temporarily suspended after an appeal by hotel owners. She claims the proceeds of the tax are earmarked for improvements to public infrastructure, beach improvements and services linked to tourism.

However, the funds will be frozen until the Canarian Supreme Court gives a final ruling on the issue. If a favourable judgement is given, Bueno claims she will raise the charge.

The Canarian Government opposes the imposition of any tourist tax, despite strong support for the measure among the general public. However, the progress of the Mogán’s municipal charge will be watched closely in other Canarian resort areas.
