At sunrise tomorrow morning, one of Lanzarote’s most unforgettable spectacles will take place on Playa Grande beach in Puerto del Carmen, as athletes and spectators gather for the start of the 34th Lanzarote Ironman race.

At 7am, hundreds of athletes will plunge into the water for the first stage of a triathlon which promises to be even more challenging than usual, given the heatwave conditions forecast.

It will also be the last Ironman to be organised by Club la Santa, although the future of the event has been assured by both the Ironman organisation and Lanzarote’s Cabildo.

Three-times world champion Patrick Lange, from Germany, will be taking part and needs a good result to qualify for the Ironman in Kona, Hawaii. He’ll be competing against rivals such as Sam Laidlow, from France, Arthur Horseau, Léon Chevalier and Dylan Magnien.

The current women’s champion on Lanzarote, Lucy Charles-Barclay, will be taking part against names like Nina Derron, Stephanie Clutterbuck and Julia Skala.

But, as usual, the elite competitors are just one of many stories on a day when hundreds of athletes defy the gruelling conditions and the screaming protests of their own bodies to win the title of Ironman.

There’ll be road closures, too. Find out which roads will be closed near you: https://gazettelife.com/news/2026-lanzarote-ironman-road-closures/
