The Canarian Tourist Board has launched a campaign encouraging Canarian residents to holiday on the islands instead of elsewhere.

Under the slogan ‘Stay with what excites you’, the campaign will urge those living on the Canaries to take “staycations”, remaining on the islands for their summer holidays.  This will boost the local economy and increase the sustainability of the islands.

The tourist board claims that around €2 billion is generated annually by inter-island tourism, around 10% of the total.

Canarian Tourist Minister Jessica de León said that local tourism was particularly important for the three “green islands” that do not have international airports. Almost 70% of those staying in El Hierro are Canarian residents, while local tourism accounts for more than 40% in La Gomera and 23% in La Palma.
