The Canarian Parliament has approved a proposal to demand sufficient police officers at the islands’ airports to handle passport control.
It has also called for the installation of biometric passport machines that are currently present on the islands but not operational.
The initial proposal related to Tenerife South airport, the seventh busiest in Spain, which has recently suffered long queues on arrival. But an amendment extended the request to all Canarian airports. Lanzarote’s César Manrique Airport has also suffered long delays since the introduction of passport stamping for third country nationals in June.
Meanwhile, calls for a Canarian Airport Authority are increasing. Armando Santana, President of the Mixed Group in Lanzarote’s Cabildo, has urged Cabildo President to demand the establishment such an authority from the Spanish government. “It’s unacceptable that an airport with the potential and profitability of the César Manrique is not receiving the investment and facilities that it requires,” said Santana.
