It may not seem like it with the cool weather, clouds and fresh winds, but levels of ultraviolet rays are abnormally high for the time of year, prompting the Canarian Health Service to issue advice to residents.

UV levels are currently at level 9, classed as “very high”, and are forecast to remain at that level until Sunday at least. UV rays can pierce cloud cover and are also unaffected by wind, although both these conditions may convince people that there is a reduced risk.

One of the most important pieces of advice is to protect children from the sun. It has been shown that sun damage in early years can increase the likelihood of skin cancer in adulthood.

Other important recommendations are:

  • Try to stay in the shade, especially between 11 am and 5 pm.
  • Wear light-coloured clothing that covers your arms and legs.
  • Wear a cap or a wide-brimmed hat that covers the face, head, ears, and neck.
  • Wear sunglasses that block both UVA and UVB rays.
  • Use sunblock with an SPF of 50 or higher. Make sure it’s within its sell-by date and apply at least every two hours.
