The newly-elected Vox council member in Tías, María Esther Tamargo, has called for the removal of the rainbow flag that the Ayuntamiento is currently displaying  to celebrate LGBT Pride Day.

Calling the flag “an inconsiderate weapon,” the councillor for the far-right party called on the Ayuntamiento to “remove this symbolism from all public spaces in all its forms.” A rainbow-painted bench in front of the Ayuntamiento building has been there for several years.

Tamargo claimed the flag “does not represent all citizens, nor all homosexuals, many of whom do not wish to be collectivised.” Instead, she called for the Spanish flag to be shown, and based her argument on a 2020 decision by the Supreme Court to forbid the flying of  Canarian independence flag in Tenerife.

Tamargo’s demand is unlikely to be heeded by Tías Ayuntamiento, but indicates how “culture war” issues are likely to become more prominent in Lanzarote politics since the arrival of Vox in a number of the island’s institutions.
