The opposition Socialist group in Lanzarote’s Cabildo will call for a tourist moratorium tomorrow, suspending the granting of all new tourist licences.

The motion is based on a 2023 report on Lanzarote’s tourist capacity by which claimed that Lanzarote had far exceeded its limits of sustainability.

“The equivalent tourist population (number of tourists on the island at any given time) has grown by 21% in just two years,” explained Socialist spokesperson Ariagona González. “That’s more than 86,000 people a day residing on the island, with the resulting pressure on our resources, infrastructure, and territory.”

Gonzalez lamented that the Cabildo’s governing group is using alleged legal limitations as an excuse to avoid imposing a moratorium and warns that the drafting of the new Island Plan cannot be used as an excuse for inaction. “Plans take years; they can be challenged, and, in the meantime, licenses continue to be granted that will affect the future of the island,” said González.

The motion is unlikely to be successful given the majority held by the CC/PP ruling group.
