The Cabildo has announced that workers will be hired to monitor visits to the Volcán del Cuervo and the Caldera Blanca, after several incidents of visitors not respecting the regulations.

Samuel Martín, the Cabildo’s environment councillor, said “We are working towards having a number of people in charge of controlling and maintaining access to the Volcán del Cuervo and Caldera Blanca, as well as a maintenance worker”.

Recently, the anonymous group Tabaiba Collective posted a video of a wedding taking place on the footpath to the Volcán del Cuervo. A large heart-shaped structure that had been erected for the event meant that other visitors were forced to leave the footpath to pass.

The Tabaiba Collective has also caused controversy itself, putting up official-looking signs that say “Do Not Enter – This Area is Closed For Tourist Overcrowding” at the Volcán and the Caldera Blanca. This is perhaps the first example of “tourist-phobia” that Lanzarote has experienced.

There is no law prohibiting access to either area, or restricting it to residents only, as the signs claim.
