The Atlantida is the longest subaquatic volcanic tunnel in the world, part of longer system that also includes the Jameos del Agua and the Cueva de los Verde. The Navy had requested use of the tunnel to carry out “reconnaissance activities related to underwater rescue.”

The Environment Department turned down the request on the basis that the tunnel is available for “scientific research” activities are permitted, as well as “recordings or filming for educational purposes. However, “bathing, recreational and sports diving, and any kind of military manoeuvres” are forbidden except in cases of except in states of emergency.

To find out more about the Atlantida Tunnel, we’d highly recommend a visit to the Volcano Museum at Jameos del Agua, where you can see various displays and even take a virtual trip through the tunnel.
