Lanzarote’s inter-urban buses were used by 5.14 million passengers last year, with an average of 14,000 journeys a day. It is a record figure for the island’s Inter City Bus service.

Bus use was highest in the final months of the year, and demand on the routes connecting Puerto del Carmen and Costa Teguise suggest that tourism was a strong factor in the high passenger numbers.

The free bus travel for regular users introduced to combat energy price rises,  also appears to be a strong factor in increased usage.

While the figures are encouraging for the environment, they also highlight the pressure on a service whose inadequacies becoming clearer all the time. Recent months have see  many complaints about overcrowded or full buses, late services caused by high demand and incidents of aggression against drivers.
