Lanzarote’s Cabildo has unanimously backed a motion that may bring limited free parking to César Manrique Airport.
The motion, presented by the Coalicion Canaria (CC), urges the Canarian government to negotiate with airport authority AENA in order to reintroduce the half-hour free parking period that operated until a few years ago.
The César Manrique Airport is the only airport in the Canaries that does not offer a short period of free parking for those dropping off people or waiting to pick them up.
The CC’s Samuel Martín said, “Lanzarote airport’s management recently took measures to limit traffic in the arrivals area of the main terminal, prohibiting private parking to pick up passengers and only allowing vehicles such as buses and taxis and rental cars”.
“Either a space is developed so that the users of Lanzarote do not have to suffer this discrimination or the first half hour free parking in the airport car park is resumed,” said Martín,
The proposal also included a proposal from the Socialist party that the airport provide a free parking area for staff who work in the grounds of the airport.
Airport workers are currently expected to pay for parking at the airport, which has led to the sight of scores of cars haphazardly parked along the verges of airport approach roads.
