Playa La Garita in Arrita was closed temporarily yesterday due to the presence of Blue Dragons, the mysterious sea slugs.

Blue Dragons also caused the prohibition of bathing at Famara beach a fortnight ago.

The beautiful slugs are predators that live at the surface of the ocean preying on organisms such as the Portuguese Man o’ War.  They then store the stinging cells of these creatures to use in their own self-defence.

The resulting sting is reported to be extremely painful although we haven’t heard of any cases on the Canaries.
