The main political parties on the Canaries have condemned attacks on Tourism Councillor Jessica de León relating to the new Canarian law on Holiday Rentals.

De Léon’s home and car have been pelted with stones, and she has received several insults and threats on social media, including a post that called to “burn her alive”.

The controversial Holiday Rental Law was passed three weeks ago, but has still not been officially published. It has been criticised for contributing to a huge increase in VV registrations in the last two years, while others claim it will destroy the livelihoods of families and individuals who rely on rental income.

De León’s party, the Coalición Canaria, said “”A disagreement with a public official cannot lead to acts that undermine our coexistence” and expressed hope that the incidents would be dealt with. “

PP leader Manuel Domingéz stated “Full support to Jessica de Léon. We come into politics to make decisions; brave decisions.”

The PSOE and Nueva Canarias parties have also condemned the attacks unequivocally, saying “Violence is never the way forward.”
