Arrecife Schoolchildren will have the chance to try Canarian stick fighting this spring, as the council’s culture department promotes the native sport in local school.
Each week a workshop will take place in one of eight secondary schools in the capital, culminating in a meeting for all the schools on the 28th May.
Lucha de Garrote (stick fighting) is an ancient sport based on the practices of the original Guanche natives of the Canaries, who often carried a stick when herding sheep and goats, especially on the rough terrain of the western islands.
