The Ayuntamiento of Arrecife has replaced signs outside the monument to the crew of the Cruz del Mar.
The monument, designed to look like a small lighthouse, was erected in memory of the seven fishermen who were murdered off the coast of Africa in 1978, after 20 armed men boarded their fishing vessel, the Cruz del Mar.
Skipper José Hernández Marrero and his brother Agustín; cook Rafael Salas Fernández,, Juan Suárez Rodríguez[; Amador Hernández Marrero; 19-year-old Alfredo Rodríguez Marrero and a child, Sebastián Cañadas were killed by machine gun fire. Three of the crew survived after jumping into the sea.
Family members paid homage to the victims on Friday, and the parade of the Virgin of Carmen in Valterra this afternoon will pause in front of the monument.
